New cutoff tools
I have always really liked cups and such that were cut off the wheel with spiraled wire. I have always had access at work to the little springs that are used to do said cutting, but I just got around to making a couple tools. I wish that I made more of my tools, and I really want to make some trimming tools next--you know--those simple angled things that basically look like a flat piece of metal bent at the end. (really technical, huh?) Any suggestions on the metal to use?

You might want to check the latest issue of Studio Potter. There was an article by the fellow who does Mudtools, I can't remember his name right now. He discusses making tools such as those and might give details about the starting materials.
ReplyDeleteThat's Michael Sherrill that makes mudtools. He's in NC & has a website - you should do a search.
ReplyDeleteWarren MacKenzie showed us a trimming tool he made that he's had for 30 years!
Yes I do have a suggestion. Many potters who make their own trim tools use the metal banding/strapping wire that is often used in industries to close boxes or attatch them to pallets. With a little thought you can probably find a source for it. I used to have a ton of the stuff I'd saved for this purpose and don't know where it is or I'd send you some.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the input guys! I'll see what I can scrounge up.
